Olympics 2008

The olympics have come and gone already...did we get a chance to watch?

well, i guess that depends on what you consider 'watching'. yes, we saw the olympics. we saw some events, some althletes from different countries, and we saw the replays - over and over and over again.

Have you ever lived in a different country than your native one and watched the olympics?
This was our first time. the only events/sports/athletes we watched were...yep! South Korean!

every channel was focused on South Korea (and usually every station covered the same event at the same time). We saw South Koreans win in a variety of events we don't usual watch in Canada - such as Judo, archery, table tennis, archery, badminton, archery, swimming, archery, weight lifting, ...you get my point. the first week was dedicated to archery! and when the events had been won by a South Korean, we had the pleasure of watching the exact same event over again as soo as they had won! on every station. at the same time.

Ok, have to admit that South Korea did really well. For such a small country, they placed 7th in the over-all medal standings. We've started back to school and the students are really proud to say they wo 13 Gold medals and 31 total - and know all the names of every South Korea who won their event.

then I ask....
How did Canada do? and everyone just laughs and says....uhhhhh, i don't know!

nothing to be too pleased about with Canada, but my point is that we watched 2 swimming events where a Canadian was in lane 7 and 8, and we got to see South Korea whip Canada's butt in baseball.

and that's about the extent of it. We had to check online to see how Canada was doing and what medals we'd won. It's not like we weren't represented! I checked online one Sunday and we were scheduled to be in 47 events that day! But we maybe saw a total of 3 Canadians on tv the whole 2 weeks.
guess it would be similar for a South Korean living in Canada during the Olympics. We keep telling our students that we'll do much better in the Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver. I hope we do!
Just another example of how different it is to live in a foreign country!
