One for the Blog

Ok, this one is definitely one for the Blog!!

We went for dinner after our Taekwondo lesson on Thursday. Our Master treated me, Craig and Robin to a lunch like no other.

We went to yound deong dong where Robin lives and we used to live. He kept saying it's same-same as bibimbap, which is a good thing cause we all like vegetables with rice that you mix together. But this was served over barley instead of rice - it was very yummy!

but, our side dishes were what has brought about this blog. None of us had ever tried these kinds of side dishes before. Some were good, some obviously need time to acquire a taste to (is that a nice enough way of putting it?! I think so!)

All of them came at once:

1. Acorn tofu-stuff. it wasn't actually tofu, but it looked like it, and was put on a salad accompanied by red chili paste. Very good.
2. Pig head (perhaps the meat of the skull) cut into rectangle fatty-parts. Served with tiny shrimp with little black eyes and antennas - very salty.
3. Some kind of snail that was in a cylinder-type shell. you sucked them out of the shell quickly, with a grain of sand in every suck. Actually quite tasty!
4. A soup that i'd described as spiced-up-tomato-soup with tofu. very good broth.

Last, we were given a 'service' dish by the manager. She cooked up a special dish for us to thank the foreigners for coming:

Sting ray

yes, those things i posted pics about/wrote about from the market - we were served one. with red chili sauce. it was whole, with the eye sockets still looking at me, with the tail on the end. and you just rip in apart with your chopsticks, eat skin and everything, and dig in.
it was super slimy and had tiny little bones that made it crunchy. craig rather liked it, but it had a pretty nasty after taste to it. he got to eat the tail.

A lunch we will not forget - but maybe try again, with the exception of the stingray.
