While on my journey to the prairies I got to spend 2 weeks in what the Sass' affectionately call 'The Village'. Winnipegosis has only 600 people left in it, and when I was growing up we'd say that we were related to half the town. It's an amazing little Ukranian town where only angle parking on main street is permited, and there are no traffic lights. There are about 10 stop signs though.
The best part of this little town is Baba Sass. Olga was born in 1925 and her parents were given land by the government who gave them 2 years to clear it and grow a crop or they'd take it away. Baba's stories are amazing. She married Ladic (Lorne) Sass at 17 years old. They have been married for 63 years. What a history.
So, here is Baba in her eveyday life. She gets up at 7am and does some stuff around her house, goes out to the garden from 8:30-10am for her exercise, picks fresh raspberries and cucumbers for breakfast, does various things from 10-12pm, makes lunch which is usually homemade chicken soup and bread, tries to have a 30 minute rest on the couch, goes to the seniors centre from 2-4pm to play cards, picks up the mail and stops in the meat market where her neices and nephew work, goes to feed Gido at the senior home til 5:30 as she is a volunteer at the home, comes home to make more yummy food, then heads out to visit her relatives or plays Bingo and usually wins on Wed and Saturdays.
Baba never stops. She is the greatest example of a servant I have ever known. Thank you God for Baba. Love you!
Leah
