Craig is really an amazing person. Yeah, we know. what else is new, Leah?!
I'm sure a lot of people out there know that already!
But here is my story to back that statement up:
Last year when we left our jobs in Iksan at International Academy, our boss basically with-held money from us. In June, he made us sign illegal contracts that stated we would pay pension, and so would he...but then he would deduct his portion of the pension off our severence pay. This is completely illegal.
The pension board had picked up that there were 2 employees (us) not paying pension (cause we had NO idea we had to), so he made us sign the new contracts. This way, he could pay the pension board while taking our money from our severence - while looking like an honest guy.
But we knew that taking it off our severence was NOT honest. But we weren't willing to confront him about it last year until we got our final pay from him. We knew we were coming back, so we would deal with it then. We had gone to both the pension and labour boards before leaving Korea and both places confirmed that this was not right.
We went back to the pension board with Robin this summer, because she was also getting cheated out of her money. The pension office called Mr.Kim. Mr.Kim met with Robin and paid her most of what was due. He said he would pay us half because that was 'fair' - after all, WE signed the contract! We were really at a loss at what to do now.
But Craig, my hero, decided to take action. He was finished teaching at his school last Wednesday by noon. He got on a bus and headed to Iksan, meeting up with a Korean friend who could help us get our point across. They decided to go to the school and speak to Mr.Kim directly to clear the matter up.
When the head teacher saw Craig, she was quite surprised...even more surprised to hear that the 'pension money matter' hadn't been worked out yet. She had the secretary get Mr.Kim on the phone and spoke to him for 10 minutes. The secretary asked Craig how much he owed us.
She said Mr.Kim would pay us our money. All of it.
WHAT?!? really?!? ok then! craig and his friend left the building without every having to see or speak to Mr.Kim.
I checked our bank accounts the next day - and there is was...ALL the money he had with-held from us almost a year earlier.
My husband is my hero!
And now we have enough money to almost cover a whole return trip ticket to Vietnam in January.
The title of the blog definitely applies!
